The winds of winter blow through the city but the warmth of shops are welcoming. Galleries and merchants offer the best deals on their goods and services.
The Torpedo Factory Art Center has many exhibits that will fill those empty spaces on walls and tables. From painting and photography to textiles and sculpture the artists will provide the inspiration through their artwork.
Alexandria’s theater community is alive with works that will warm the insides. Port City Players will offer their presentation of “Nuts” during January. The drama is set in a New York courtroom hearing a competency case.
The life of Mahalia Jackson is on Metrostage. Bernardine Mitchell brings her talent to this role that follows Jackson’s career from the segregated South to her performances on the steps of the Lincoln Memorial.
The Little Theatre of Alexandria is presenting “Scapino!” The story centers on two servants who fall in love while watching over two young men. At the end of February the theatre will open the show “Chicago.” This show about the “windy city” is set in the 1920’s following the exploits of two women.
Dancing fills the card in January and February at Gadsby’s Tavern Museum. The Civil War Ball in January will offer period dancing, music, and desserts. February is the time to celebrate the Birthnight of General George Washington with dinner and dancing from the 18th Century.
And don’t forget the George Washington Birthday Parade through the streets of Old Town to celebrate our founding father. Entry to the historic sites in Alexandria are free that day.
The Alexandria Symphony has an All-Beethoven Concert at Schlesinger Hall featuring piano soloist Yuliya Gorenman.
For the young among us Hooray for Books! has a continuing series of events for the young and young at heart. Readings for kids and author’s events are on the schedule.
Check out the Stabler-Leadbeater Apothecary Museum’s new up-close and informative tour called “Behind the Counter.” This Alexandria treasure was originally opened in 1792.
Del Ray Artisans has two exhibits, “New Work for a New Year,” featuring works that have never been exhibited, and “Artiom,” that uses idiom, clichés and word phrases in their artwork. The gallery is open weekends on Mount Vernon Avenue.
